Japanese Braiding on the Takadai and Marudai

This workshop is about flexibility and as far as possible tailored to each student’s needs. The braids made on the takadai are obliquely woven structures making both plain and twill weaves. The braids can also make double weave and have complex pick up patterns. All the braids are obliquely interlaced and have a wonderful drape. These braids can be made as scarves, belts and straps. All of these and more can be made on the Japanese braiding equipment. Students wishing to work on and find creative answers for specific projects; for example jewelry, sashes or clothing embellishments, are encouraged to bring their beads, bangles and buckles. Takadai’s are not supplied for the class, however two are available for rental. Mauradai’s are provided for this class. Class limited to 12

The aim of the workshop is to help students acquire the basic skills of kumihimo using a marudai. Perhaps you have been working on a foam disc and want to try out a marudai. Beginning with eight strand braids you will learn the basic “right minded skills” that are essential to better braiding. We will work through the basic braid moves paying particular attention on how to use the hands to get the rhythm and balance needed for quality braids. According to previous experience, individuals can progress to 16 and 24 strand braids, working at their own pace. The other essential skills you will learn are: setting-up the equipment, ratios of weight and tensions, recording bobbin movements, thread preparation, interpreting diagrams and finishing techniques. No previous experience is required, but intermediate and advanced students will be accommodated as well. Class limited to 12
