Susan dazzled us last year at our spinning seminar by dyeing beautiful colored yarns using mushrooms as the dye source. This fall Susan will be teaching a workshop on the secrets of this rather mysterious source of yellow, purple, red, and teal green dye. Fall is a terrific time to look for mushrooms, so during this four day workshop we will take a field trip to Michaux State Forest to look for different types of mushrooms. Susan will help to identify the types discovered. She will also provide us with numerous types of mushrooms for use in the class. Monday afternoon we will get started dyeing and should expect to get lots of samples on 2 types of wool yarns. There will be a slide show and talk on the International Fungi-Fibre Symposium activities if time and interest allow. Susan has traveled extensively in this country and northern Europe gathering information on mushrooms. Most of the four days will be devoted to dyeing. Be assured that you do not need any previous knowledge about funguses (mushrooms). Susan along with her cousin and assistant Nancy Parker a mushroom expert and mushroom stalker will be happy to answer your questions. Class limited to 10.

If you have never tried dyeing yarn with natural dye stuffs, here is your opportunity to see just how much fun it can be. You will learn how to use different mordants with the dyes to add brightness and colorfastness to your dyed yarns. Students will be taught how to prepare a dyebath using simple household equipment. Each student will be given skeins of wool and wool blends and then be shown how to dye single color and color blends using Cochineal, Madder, Osage Orange and a few other natural dyestuffs to create a range of glorious colors. Juanita will also show you how to make concentrated dyes to paint on your skeins for variegated yarns. Class limited to 10.

If you have never tried to dye your own yarn but are intrigued by the idea of creating your own unique skeins, here is the workshop for you. We will explain the basics of home dyeing. Although you will need very few items, it's important to know and use the proper equipment. We'll make skeins of wool, silk, and mohair yams and prepare them for the dye bath. The next portion of the class will be devoted to pure fun and creativity. Using both Cushing and Gay Wool dyes you will learn to mix dyes and colors to make new shades and colors. You will also make multicolored skeins by dipping and directly painting dye onto skeins. Overdying will show how unrelated colors can be made to work together by introducing a new color family. Class limited to 10.
