Beginning Weaving Week
| |
Instructor:
Thomas E. Knisely
| |
Fee: $475.00
| |
Our Beginning Weaving class starts each student on a prewarped loom so that
they can become familiar with the different parts of the loom and how it
works. Each student begins by weaving cotton towels and then a patterned
sampler so that they understand how to read a pattern draft. Warping
experience comes in the middle of the week after the student becomes
accustomed to the looms. Each student is guided through the process of
calculating the material requirements for a scarf project, and then proceeds
to warp a loom for their own scarf. A variety of projects is accomplished,
giving the student an exposure to various types of weaving as well as
finishing techniques. Materials are provided with the exception of the
scarf. Class limited to 6.

Double Weave Blanket
| |
Instructor:
Thomas E. Knisely
| |
Fee: $360.00
| |
Q. What does a big beautiful luxurious blanket have in common with a narrow loom? A. Double Weave. Double weave is a clever technique that allows you to weave two separate layers of plain weave fabric at the same time on a 4 shaft loom. By carefully maintaining the treadling and shuttle direction you can close the one selvage creating a double width fabric. When you have finished weaving and open it up your blanket will be approximately twice the weaving width of your loom. If you have ever longed for one of those beautiful textured throws shown draped over the back of a chair in a magazine, this is your chance. During the class, students will learn the basic fundamentals of Double Weave and then warp a loom using our easy chain warp method. Materials are not provided for this class. A 10% discount is given for yarns purchased for use in this class or students may bring their own . Class limited to 8.

Here is the workshop to help you to better understand block double weave theory. With eight shafts you can produce two pattern blocks of doubleweave. Each pattern block weaves with different colors on the front and back or blends colors to weave beautiful surprising results. Using 8/2 tencel for both warp and weft each student will warp their looms in class using colors of their choosing and be shown how to warp effortlessly with slippery threads. Students will also be shown how to follow a profile draft for the threading of the scarf. Warped for approximately 10” wide and woven 60” long your scarf will be a real eye catcher. This class is not to be confused with double width or tubular doubleweave. Class limited to 8.

PA German Tape Weaving, from 1750 to 2013
| |
Instructor:
Susan Weaver
| |
Fee: $195.00
| |
Hand woven tape ribbon was vital to the lives of the Pennsylvania German farm families throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. In pre-zipper days, because of their strength and colorful patterns, these long, narrow bands of cloth were used traditionally for many tying needs, such as men’s suspenders, garters, apron straps, and drawstrings for women’s petticoats. This class explores the history of this traditional tape. Students warp different styles of tape looms and in a round robin format, will weave historical patterns of tape ribbon. Samples of contemporary tape will give students many ideas for functional and holiday tapes. Box tape looms, handmade by a regional tape loom maker will be sold to continue weaving up lots of tape ribbon after the workshop. Class limited to 8

| |
Fee: $425.00
| |
This is the first in the series of classes called Towels, Vol 1, 2, 3, & 4. The thought behind these classes is to incorporate ways for students to learn more about weave structures and patterning along with projects that everyone loves to weave and use. The first class Towels Vol 1 - The Twills, will explore twills and twill variations. The other classes are Towels, Vol 2 - Checks, stripes and plaids, Vol 3 - Lace and lacey type Weaves, Vol 4 - Miscellaneous Weaves. Be sure to check the class schedule and over the next several years you could end up with 3 to 4 dozen interesting and educational towels.
The first in a series of towel classes, Towels Vol. 1 - The Twills, will explore twills and twill variations. We will have a dozen warps set up to weave. You will learn about straight twill, point twill, rosepath, M’s & W’s, turned twills, undulating twills, herringbone, broken twill and twills on 4 and 8 shaft looms. During the 4 day class students will weave in a round robin format so that at the end of the class you should have 12 different towels to take home and finish. You’ll also have an opportunity to try different types and sizes of thread. Class limited to 10.

Towels Vol 2 - Plain Weaves

Instructor:
Thomas E. Knisely
| |
Fee: $425.00

Here is the second part of a five volume series exploring different ways of patterning textiles. What could be better than weaving and studying through a useful project like towels. Plain Weave is often looked at as the least versatile or interesting way of weaving fabric. It’s called after all plain weave. Its been my observation that, when given a limited number of shafts to use, weavers are forced to think of ingenious ways to pattern using only a tabby weave. During this workshop you will have the opportunity to weave 13 different towels on prewarped looms going from loom to loom in a round robin format. We will explore the different way of designing stripes and checks. You will sample Log Cabin several different ways, and learn about shadow weaves and color & weave effects. There will be towels with textured yarns, clasped and twisted wefts and inlay techniques in both warp and weft. We will also look at basket weave and its numerous variations and talk about spacing and setts as a way of weaving interesting towels in plain weave. Class limited to 10.

Nothing is nicer to use or give as a gift than a handwoven towel. Combining absorbent threads with a decorative lace pattern is surely a winning hand towel for any kitchen or bath. Lace is the third towel class in the series of four. In this class you will learn the differences between Spot Bronson and Lace Bronson, Huck Lace and Canvas Weave as well as weave examples of Swedish Lace and learn how to treadle for lacy effects on non-traditional lace structures. Each student will weave their way through 13 pre-warped looms and return home with a stack of beautiful towels. Whether you’re weaving your way through the whole series of towels or just coming for the first time you’ll go home with a greater knowledge of lace weaves. Class limited to 10.

Instructor:
Thomas E. Knisely
| |
Fee: $425.00

Shadow Weave, like Log Cabin, is woven with alternating light and dark warp ends that interlace with alternating light and dark weft threads. The structure is basically plainweave which creates pattern blocks and sometimes weaves tiny skips where the blocks meet. Throughout this four day workshop you will learn two different methods to thread and weave Shadow Weave. There will be thirteen different prewarped patterns on 4 and 8 shaft looms using 8/2 cotton and cotolin for guaranteed absorbancy. Students will move from loom to loom and weave in a round robin format giving them the opportunity to go home with thirteen towels and a better understanding of Shadow Weave. Class limited to 10.

You may use your own materials or purchase yarns here and receive a 10% discount on the yarns for your shawl.
