Special Three Day Classes

Deflected Double Weave
  Instructor: Thomas E. Knisely
  Fee: $295.00
Deflected Double Weave can be described as a textured fabric made of small cell areas of plain weave that are surrounded on the sides with warp and weft floats. Using threads that are a non conventional match will guarantee a textural surface when washed and fulled. Because the plain weave areas shift around and don't stack on top of each other as in traditional double weave the fabric is lighter and more conducive for scarves, shawls, blankets and fabric that can be used for clothing. Deflected Double Weave can be separated into three categories: fabrics with differential shrinkage, felted fabrics and fabrics with flat surfaces. Students will weave 12 samples of Deflected Double Weave in a round robing format reflecting examples of all three categories. Washing and finishing of the fabric is a great portion of this workshop and students will receive hands on demonstrations of how to finish Deflected Double Weave to achieve the textures and puckering associated with this weave. Class limited to 10.

Schedule: None scheduled at this time. Check back for future dates.

Hand Dyed Warps & Woven Scarves
  Instructor: Thomas E. Knisely
  Fee: $265.00
This workshop is intended to move you into the next stage of working with hand dyed yarns. Each student will be given a prewound silk warp that's long enough for two scares. On the first day, which starts at 1:00 P.M., you will be taught how to dye the warp and weft yarns to complete two scarves. Drying will take place overnight. The next two days will be spent warping the loom and weaving our scarves. Woven in tabby or twill, these scarves have bold areas of color that blend into one another. Your will also be shown how to achieve Ikat effects by shifting the warp threads. Class limited to 8.

  Schedule:
  • March 4 & 6, 2011 (Friday & Sunday), 1st day class starts at 1:00 PM

Overshot Shawl
  Instructor: Thomas E. Knisely
  Fee: $350.00
We are offering a contemporary twist to a recognizable historic weave-structure. This shawl is arranged in a gamp format with five classic patterns threaded across the width of the warp. The patterns include Cat Track & Snail Trail, Wheel of Fortune, Blooming Leaf, Maltese Cross and Mary Ann Ostrander. Each pattern is threaded with a different color in the warp and these colors are also used in the tabby weft. As you weave each pattern to it’s true treadling you will also get new patterns in the other threaded pattern areas. The overshot shawl is not only visually beautiful to look at but so much fun to weave. Each student will weave on a prewarped loom threaded with 10/2 Perle Cotton to his or her choice of pre-selected colors. These color ways include; Berry Patch (blues, purples, & reds), Woodlands (browns, dark greens, beige & moss green), Birch Bark (browns black, natural, & gray), Sedona (sandstone, red rock, terra cotta, & turquoise), Red Hot ( wine, red hot, orange, & yellow) and Meadows & Glens (green, yellow green & blue green). Samples of these colors will be sent out to students 8 weeks prior to the class so pre-registration is a must. Your finished shawl will be a work of art and joy forever. Class limited to 10.

  Schedule:
  • November 8 to 10, 2010 (Monday to Wednesday), 9:00 to 4:30
  • March 9 to 11, 2011 (Wednesday to Friday), 9:00 to 4:30

Rep Weaves
  Instructor: Thomas E. Knisely
  Fee: $295.00
Many of you have asked for a warpface workshop based on the type of rugs that Tom has woven for Handwoven and Weavers magazines. Rep Weave is translated from "Ripsmatta" meaning warpface pattern weaves. During this three day workshop, students will weave mat-size samples in a round robin format. You will learn how to calculate for these dense rugs. We'll discuss the threading systems associated with rep weaves and you will learn to draft and weave beautiful rugs for 2, 4, and 8 shafts. Finishing techniques will be discussed toward the end of the class and students will go home with 13 different sample mats

Schedule: None scheduled at this time. Check back for future dates.

Shawls with Supplementary Warps
  Instructor: Thomas E. Knisely
  Fee: $250.00
We have had many requests for a class that would help an individual better understand how supplementary warps work and if they need a double back beam to weave them. Well, here is the class for you and you are going to weave a beautiful shawl too. Each student will be helped to choose the material and design a ground warp and then a supplementary warp to blend with it. You will learn how to warp the loom so that the supplementary warp is tensioned separately from the ground warp using simple items that are easily obtainable. Shawls will average 24" by 85" more or less and resemble the shawls that many of the well known weavers display in galleries and up-scale craft shows. A 10% discount will be offered for any materials purchased here for the class.

  Schedule:
  • January 6 to 8, 2011 (Thursday to Saturday), 9:00 to 4:30

Summer & Winter
  Instructor: Thomas E. Knisely
  Fee: $275.00
Summer & Winter is a weave structure often associated with coverlets. Weavers are attracted to Summer & Winter by it’s unique threading system that creates bold geometric patterns with short surface floats. These short floats make Summer & Winter an ideal choice for coverlets, rugs, upholstery or any application requiring a hard wearing fabric. Students will weave on prewarped looms exploring different treadling possibilities while weaving a valuable sampler or table runner. There will also be several additional looms warped for you to try Summer & Winter as rugs, multiharness patterns and color effects.

Schedule: None scheduled at this time. Check back for future dates.

V-Shaped Shawl
  Instructor: Thomas E. Knisely
  Fee: $250.00
This stunning shawl is a variation of the quesquimitl that is worn throughout Central America. We think our version is the Queen of Shawls. You may have seen samples on display here in the studio. The V-shape in the back of the shawl is the result of weaving the warp ends of one section into the warp of another still on the loom. Come and let us share with you the tricks of weaving one of these magnificent shawls. The first day will be spent on warp planning, choosing yarns and warping a loom for your shawl. You may use your own materials or purchase yarns here and receive a 10% discount on the yarns for your shawl. The rest of your time will be devoted to learning how to effectively weave your shawl and proper finishing techniques.

  Schedule:
  • September 28 to 30; , 2010 (Tuesday to Thursday), 9:00 to 4:30
  • January 24 to 26, 2011 (Monday to Wednesday), 9:00 to 4:30

Weft Faced Rugs (Boundweave)
  Instructor: Thomas E. Knisely
  Fee: $295.00
Boundweave is a weft face weave structure woven with multiple twill treadlings. With the proper balance of warp and weft yarns, a heavy weight textile that is suitable for rugs can be woven. During this 3 day workshop students will learn the basic fundamentals of Boundweave as well as weave a sampler of different patterns on prewarped looms. Each student will then learn how to finish the ends and block their boundweave sample. Material will be provided. Why not join us and weave a bold and graphic sampler that is not only educational but makes a great wall hanging or loom bench pad. Class limited to 6.
