Special Two Day Classes

Beginning Rag Rug
  Instructor: Thomas E. Knisely
  Fee: $200.00
This workshop is for the intermediate weaver who wishes to try their hand at making Rag Rugs. We will discuss the variety of materials you should use for warp. Then we'll look at how to prepare fabric for cutting your weft strips or what to use if you are purchasing pre-cut strips or other materials. Each student will then go to a prewarped loom to weave their rugs. The warps are arranged in an attractive pattem that will teach you about Log Cabin patterning, Color & Weave theory and arranging stripes for a color graduation all in the same warp. We will also discuss finishing techniques for Rag Rugs. Class limited to 6.

  Schedule:
  • January 3 & 4, 2014 (Friday & Saturday), 9:00 to 4:30

Expand Your Weaving Repertoire with Surface Embellishment
  Instructor: Sara Bixler
  Fee: $180.00
This workshop has been developed in response to a class offered several times to our intermediate level rigid heddle who would like to dress up or embellish their plain woven fabrics. The question is often asked, “How do you make a simple one-color scarf, table runner or curtains with that special little extra something to make it one of a kind?” In this two-day workshop students will weave a sampler on a pre-warped floor loom, experimenting with such techniques as; Danish medallions, leno lace, crows feet, adding beads to your weaving, hem stitching variations and much more. Looms will be pre-warped with 3/2 Perle Cotton and all weft materials will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring along any novelty threads they have in their stash to play with, but not required. The workshop will highlight uses of some tools students may never have incorporated into their weaving before such as pick-up sticks, netting shuttles, crochet hooks and using two shuttles at the same time. Students should be familiar with the basic operations in using a floor loom and have fundamental experience in weaving plain weave fabrics. Prepare to wow your friends, family and fellow weavers with your new knowledge of some really astonishing new techniques you’ll be adding to your weaving repertoire. Class limited to 8

  Schedule:
  • September 12 & 13, 2013 (Thursday & Friday), 9:00 to 4:30

Shaker Rag Rugs
  Instructor: Thomas E. Knisely
  Fee: $200.00
The Shakers are a religious community that are recognized for their distinctive designs in furniture and high quality of craftsmanship. Starting in the 1840's the Shakers began weaving rag rugs, for themselves and for sale, that had a very attractive patterning. These patterns were the result of twisting finely cut rags or yarns in either an S or Z twist direction. During this 2 day workshop each student will weave a Shaker Rag Rug on a prewarped loom. You'll learn how to prepare the rags and yarns twist them by manipulating the materials while at the loom You'll also be taught how to finish your rug with the distinctive shaker braided selvage edging using either a four, five or seven strand braid or how to use twill tape to bind them. Class limited to 6.
