Japanese Braiding for the Takadai, Ayatakedai and Karakumidai
| |
Instructor:
Rodrick Owens
| |
Fee: $250.00
| |
Braids for scarves, belts and straps, all of these and more can be made on the Japanese Braiding Equipment. The workshop is about flexibility and as far as possible tailored to each students needs. These three methods of making braids and bands all make flat narrow structures. The Takadai braids are plain weave and twill, whereas the Ayatakedai produces twined bands that are similar to tablet weaving and the Karakumidai enables the braider to make both Japanese and Peruvian obliquely interlaced braids.Takadai can make single plain weave patterned braids, double weave and complex pick up patterns, all the braids are obliquely interlaced and have a wonderful drape. The threads used for the Ayatakedai are held on bobbins and have an advantage over tablet weaving for the bands for they can be made by interchanging threads between twined and wrapped structures. The braids on the Karakumidai usually adhere to strict structure of the Japanese patterns, but the braids can also be made as freeform creative. It is also possible to make many of Peruvian headband braids. Equipment is not supplied for the class. Class limited to 12.

Have you ever wondered what you would do with the braids that you make? Had ideas about making a project, but could not find the right answer to the puzzle. Perhaps you have been working on a foam disc and want to try out a marudai. This then is a workshop where you will find answers and be able to advance. Whether you wish to work on a Marudai or bring your own Takadai it is important to know how to control the threads as you work to obtain a good
finish to your work.
We will work through the basic braid moves paying particular attention on how to use the hands to get the rhythm and balance needed for quality braids. As these skills are learned the next important step is to understand the structure of the different braids and how to read diagrams. Students wishing to work on and find creative answers for specific projects for example jewelry, sashes or clothing embellishments are encouraged to bring their beads, bangles and buckles. Class limited to 12.

Shaker Rag Rugs
| |
Instructor:
Thomas E. Knisely
| |
Fee: $200.00
| |
The Shakers are a religious community that are recognized for their distinctive designs in furniture and high quality of craftsmanship. Starting in the 1840's the Shakers began weaving rag rugs, for themselves and for sale, that had a very attractive patterning. These patterns were the result of twisting finely cut rags or yarns in either an S or Z twist direction. During this 2 day workshop each student will weave a Shaker Rag Rug on a prewarped loom. You'll learn how to prepare the rags and twist them by using a spinning wheel or by manipulating the materials while at the loom You'll also be taught how to finish your rug with the distinctive shaker braided selvage edging using either a four, five or seven strand braid.
