Beginning Temari Ball Class
| |
Instructor:
Lynnette Beam
| |
Fee: $50.00
| |
Temari is the Japanese art of embroidering on a yarn wrapped sphere. Originally made by winding silk rags into a ball, it was then covered with yarn and thread. The individual then created beautiful patterns by embroidering and wrapping different colors of yarns over the surface of the base. In this workshop, we will begin by using a styrofoam ball base and cover it with yarns and sewing thread. Perle cotton and metallic threads will then be used to create the finished embellishment and patterns. During this day long workshop, you will start with a design that can be finished in class. Should there be enough time you can start a second ball that can be finished at home. There are a number of books that include designs for all skill levels.

Countermarch Looms
| |
Instructor:
Thomas E. Knisely
| |
Fee: $80.00

This class is for the individual who has a countermarch loom or for someone who is thinking of purchasing one but has been scared off by the idea of a countermarch tie up. During this class we will examine the differences between vertical and horizontal countermarch systems by comparing our Glimakra Standard, Cranbrook and Toika looms. We will cover the drafting notations and then warp and tie-up the Glimakra from scratch. Once this is done students will clearly see how much of a pleasure it is to work on a countermarch loom. Class limited to 15.

Finishing Weaving
| |
Instructor:
Thomas E. Knisely
| |
Fee: $100.00
| |
This one day workshop is devoted solely to the finishing of handwovens. I like to think of finishing as a two step process, finishing the fabric by washing and fulling and finishing through stabilizing the edges. Step 1: you will learn how to wash cottons, linens and wool fabrics for the first time off the loom and we will discuss how to handle them in future washings. Step 2: Each student will make a sampler on a prewarped loom. This will teach you our tricks for making an evenly rolled hem and we will also give you practice on hemstitching both ends of the piece as well as how to do ladder and trellis hemstitches. Later in the day you will receive a prewoven mat so you can learn about weft protectors such as overhand knots, Damascus and Philippine edges. We will then proceed with learning all about warp protectors such as 3, 4, 5 strand flat braided fringe, twisted fringe, sennit and square knots.

How to Use Your 8 Shaft Loom
| |
Instructor:
Thomas E. Knisely
| |
Fee: $90.00
| |
Let's take the mystery out of 8 shaft weaving and make it easy and a pleasure to weave. Do you remember how magical it was to see your first 4 shaft twill develop as you wove along following your treadling sequence? Weaving on 8 shafts is just as easy as four with the exception of the patterns being more beautiful and elaborate with lots of variations that just aren't possible on 4 shafts. We will start the day by reviewing 4 shaft twills through some simple drafting and then expand to 8 shaft twills. After a thorough explanation about tie-ups you'll have the confidence to make changes and alter the tie-ups to create new patterns. Each student will weave on a prewarped loom that has been threaded by us to a gamp arrangement. You will see quickly how your tie-up looks on a straight draw twill, a point twill and even a block twill treadling.

Nuno Felted Scarf
| |
Instructor:
Mary Wilson
| |
Fee: $60.00
| |
Nuno felting is a Japanese fabric felting technique. It melds loose fiber, usually wool, into a sheer fabric such as silk gauze. This creates a lightweight felt that can totally cover the background fabric or be used as a single decorative design. Experience the fun of felting. Using nuno felting techniques, Mary Wilson of Pearl Moon Alpacas will show you how to transform layers of wool fleece and fibers onto silk to make a beautiful
drapable scarf. In this class we will cover layout, felting, fulling and finishing. Students will bring home a completed scarf. Materials will be provided for the class.

Instructor:
Dorothy Smullen
| |
Fee: $70.00

This one day workshop uses shelf and bracket fungi seen on logs and branches in the woods to create hand-crafted paper. Participants will use molds and deckles and pulp made from only the fungus and water to create sheets of ÒmushroomÓ paper. These papers can be used for cards, made into books or connected with fungi dyed wool for wall hangings. Other craft ideas include bowls, sculpture and beads for jewelry. Class limited to 10.

Synthetic Dye
| |
Instructor:
Thomas E. Knisely
| |
Fee: $100.00
| |
If you have never tried to dye your own yarn but are intrigued by the idea of creating your own unique skeins, here is the workshop for you. We will explain the basics of home dyeing. Although you will need very few items, it's important to know and use the proper equipment. We'll make skeins of wool, silk, and mohair yams and prepare them for the dye bath. The next portion of the class will be devoted to pure fun and creativity. Using both Cushing and Gay Wool dyes you will learn to mix dyes and colors to make new shades and colors. You will also make multicolored skeins by dipping and directly painting dye onto skeins. Overdying will show how unrelated colors can be made to work together by introducing a new color family. Class limited to 10.

Theo Moorman Technique
| |
Instructor:
Thomas E. Knisely
| |
Fee: $95.00
| |
Theo Moorman was a world known fiber artist who developed this technique to help create large scale pictorial tapestries without having to resort to traditional tapestry. Using techniques similar to those of tapestry weavers, you may follow a drawn pattern, cartoon or create a design as you go. With the Moorman technique, the pattern yarns are inlayed onto the surface of the progressing ground fabric and are held down with fine tie down threads that stitch the pattern onto the top layer of the fabric, leaving the back side clear of any pattern. This opens many possibilities for projects that may have been discarded because of the time involved in doing traditional tapestry. Clothing, upholstery fabrics, wall hangings and ecclesiastical installations are all possible using the Theo Moorman technique. Students will weave on prewarped looms sampling different variations.

Weaving Theory & Drafting
| |
Instructor:
Thomas E. Knisely
| |
Fee: $80.00
| |
Do you get discouraged with your weaving because you lack some of the basic knowledge that's needed to plan a project like how to determine the proper sett for an unknown thread or how to measure the right amount of warp so as not to run short. Or maybe how to figure out how much you will need to finish a project. These are all things you really should know to make you feel comfortable about your weaving. This class will teach you to read a threading draft and explain all the different parts of a draft, the threading, the tie-p and treading. We'll show you how to determine the treadling by analyzing the threading and then show you how to decipher the tie-up for four harnesses and multi-harness. We'll also tell you about old weavers customs for treadling Star Fashion, Rose Fashion and on opposites. Each student will then be shown how to do a drawdown on graph paper so they can see how their pattern will look when woven. Also note, not all threading drafts are the same. Another form, Profile drafting is a shorthand version of drafting where the pattern is to apprear on the fabric. All this will be covered in this class. We're sure your'll go home feeling more confident about your weaving. Class limited to 15.
