Students learn how and why to adjust their wheel for this fine, short staple fiber. This workshop gives spinners proper techniques for spinning different forms of cotton fiber from the cotton boll to prepared sliver. Students will learn how to ply cotton. Finishing yarns for weaving or knitting will be discussed. This class is designed for beginner and intermediate spinners. Students need to be able to spin their wheels consistently clockwise. Class limited to 18

We will discuss when to use your wheel ’s different whorls for soft spun or tightly spun yarns. We will show you how to prepare and spin cotton and silk. Spinning in the Old Way
  Instructor: Thomas E. Knisely
  Fee: $85.00

We will do a hands-on examination of old textiles and spinning equipment and make comparisons to our modern versions of spinning wheels and textiles. Students will learn to prepare different fibers for spinning on various drop spindles, the wool wheel and saxony wheel. We will also discuss plying techniques and how to achieve it when you have only one bobbin. You know, you never find an antique wheel with a lazy kate. Come join us and learn the spinning techniques of the Old People. This class is not intended for beginners. Class limited to 10.

Spinning Novelty Designer Yarns
  Instructor: Thomas E. Knisely
  Fee: $90.00
Do you have spinner's block where every skein seems o look like the rest? Every spinner has a comfort zone that's easy to fall into. In this workshop you will learn how to spin novelty yarns with ease. Novelty yarns have color and textural interest that sets them apart from other yarns. You will learn how to do color blending for tweeds. Plying techniques, like Navajo Plying and cable yarns will also be shown along with spiral and knot yarns and how to add in commercial yarns. How to do core spinning for heavier dreadlock looking yarns will be show. In the end you will be celebraing the slub, instead of trying to smooth it out. Some homework will be required so basic knowledge of spinning is necessary. Class limited to 8.

Spinning off the Point... with Cotton
  Instructor: Joan S. Ruane
  Fee: $100.00
Spinning off the point allows more control over the yarn you are spinning as there is no “draw-in” pull on the fiber like you have using a spinning wheel. The class will be learning to spin off the point of a takli support spindle. This will give them the long draw technique of spinning. Learning to control the thickness and strength is important in getting the yarn you want to have for a project. With the takli under their belt we will move to a variety of charkha wheels, learning the differences and their limitations. Students will have a chance to open and CLOSE an Indian book charkha. Several stand alone charkhas and quill heads will be available to work on and hopefully a great wheel if one is available in the area. Students are encouraged to bring in their charkhas and quills to class. Class limited to 18
