Beginning Spinning Day

| |
Our one day beginning class covers the different types of wools and their uses for different styles of yarn. Students use our spinning wheels and equipment, or bring their own if they have one. Each person is taught the process of washing raw wool, how to prepare worsted and woolen yarns using wool combs and hand carders, as well as how to operate a drum carder. After you have spun a sufficient amount of singles yarn, you learn how to ply them together to make suitable yarns for knitting or weaving.

Cotton Spinning

Spinning Cotton has proved to be a challenge to even some of the most
experienced spinners. The frustration comes from trying to spin a fiber with
a short staple length. Students will be shown how to adjust their wheels to
spin short fibers and then how to prepare cotton for spinning. Each student
will experience spinning cotton roving, spinning from the seed and you will
learn how to card cotton into a rolag or Puni. Blocking and finishing your
thread will also be covered.

Intermediate Spinning

The emphasis of this class is on fiber preparation and spinning. Analyzing the fiber and determining if carding or combing is best for the yarn you wish to spin and how to go about it. You will learn to spin a soft heavy yarn or super fine thread. Instructions for carding cotton, dressing a distaff and spinning flax, as well as ways to spin silk will be covered in this class.

Making the Most of Your Drum Carder

This informative one day class will help you to better understand how a drumcarder works and the pros and cons of different makes and models. Fiber Blending is easy to do with the proper drumcards and we will show you how to blend different fibers such as wool, alpaca, llama, silk and silk noil, as well as man made soysilk and tencel. Color blending your dyed fibers is fun and you will feel like you can take control of your spinning and felting projects. We will show ou how to card for subtle color changes to tweed yarns and how to add glitz to your yarns. How to do repeatable batches for large projects will be discussed. Class limited to 10.

Spindle Spinning

This class is intended for beginners and those who already spin. In this class we start by discussing different ways of preparing wool. Carding, combing and dressing a distaff that holds your fiber while you spin will all be covered in detail. Students will be shown and taught to spin on a variety of spindles such as the high whorl, low whorl, Turkish, hand spindle, Navajo and Tahkli spindle. Toward the end of the day students will be taught to use their spindle to make a two and three ply yarn.

Spinning Alpaca and Llama

This class is for the spinner who wants to increase their knowledge of fiber
preparation and explore the wonderfully soft world of spinning Camelid
fibers. Students will learn how to identify and prepare Huaccaya and Suri
Alpaca fleece and recognize the difference between alpaca and llama
fleece. You will be shown how to wash, card, flick card and comb these
fibers and then be shown how to spin soft heavy weight to fine lace weight
yarns. We will show you how to easily separate the guard hairs from the
softer fiber often found with llama fleeces. Depending on the availability,
each student will have a chance to try spinning camel hair and down fibers.

Spinning in the Old Way

This spinning class is ideal for individuals interested in history and spinning and for interpreters at museum sites who demonstrate spinning. We will do a hands-on examination of old textiles and spinning equipment and make comparisons to our modern versions of spinning wheels and textiles. Students will learn to prepare different fibers for spinning on various drop spindles, the wool wheel and saxony wheel. We will also discuss plying techniques and how to achieve it when you have only one bobbin. You know, you never find an antique wheel with a lazy kate. Come join us and learn the spinning techniques of the Old People. This class is not intended for beginners.

Spinning Novelty Designer Yarns

Do you have spinner's block where every skein seems o look like the rest? Every spinner has a comfort zone that's easy to fall into. In this workshop you will learn how to spin novelty yarns with ease. Novelty yarns have color and textural interest that sets them apart from other yarns. You will learn how to do color blending for tweeds. Plying techniques, like Navajo Plying and cable yarns will also be shown along with spiral and knot yarns and how to add in commercial yarns. How to do core spinning for heavier dreadlock looking yarns will be show. In the end you will be celebraing the slub, instead of trying to smooth it out. Some homework will be required so basic knowledge of spinning is necessary. Class limited to 8.
