Never Fear Steeks!
  Instructor: Deb Glass
  Fee: $50.00
This class is designed to take the fear out of cutting your knitted garment. Steeks are extra stitches added to a garment at the neck opening, arm holes and cardigan fronts, so the knitter can continue to knit in the round. Four sample swatches will be knitted prior to start of class, these samples represent a 1) cardigan front & back 2) neck opening 3) arm hole 4) a 2-color swatch knitted in the round. We will be discussing different methods of knitting and securing the steeks (Fair Isle vs. Norwegian). Then we will practice three different approaches to securing the steeks before we cut the swatches. The three approaches to securing the steeks are 1) chain crochet stitch 2) single crochet stitch 3) machine sewn steek. After cutting the steeks, we will learn how to attach the cardigan front at the shoulders with a three needle bind off to the back sample swatch, knit up stitches, knit button holes and fasten the steek in place. The class will discuss advantages of steeks, yarns, sweater design, planning and converting a sweater pattern to include steeks, and knitting gauge swatches in the round. After taking this class, you will never fear using steeks, scissors and cutting in the same sentence and no more sewing seams! Class limited to 8.
